Harry J. Borglum, 77 – Obituary

 

BRICELYN – Funeral services were held Wednesday Sept. 27 for Harry J. Borglum at North Blue Earth Lutheran Church in Brush Creek Township with Rev. Ed Nieman and Rev. Patricia Hinkie officiating. Visitation was held at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells from 4-8 p.m Sept. 26, and one hour prior at the church. Interment followed at North Blue Earth Lutheran Cemetery in Brush Creek Township.

 

Harry passed away Saturday Sept. 23 at his home.

He was born Nov. 6, 1922, in Walnut Lake Township in Faribault Country to John and Karla (Pederson) Borglum. Harry and his family moved to a farm in Brush Creek Township. He was baptized March 20, 1931, and confirmed Oct. 24, 1937, at North Blue Earth Lutheran Church. He attended school in District 51, graduating from the eight grade. Harry then helped his parents on the farm and worked for other farmers in the area until 1942, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He had this training at the Great Lakes Naval Station. He served in the Southwest and Southeast Pacific, Europe, Mediterranean Sea, and African Theaters. Harry was involved in the battle of the Guadalcanal, his ship, the USS De Haven was sunk. He returned to the States Feb. 1943 for a new ship, the USS Baldwin. He ran convoy for a while near England and for the invasion of Normandy, then for the invasion of southern France.

He returned home in 1946. He married Marian Steinhauer May 9, 1947, at Faith Lutheran Church in Walters. Harry operated a gas station and repair shop in Walters and moved at a farm in Brush Creek Township in 1948. They farmed there until 1962 when they moved to Harry’s home farm where he farmed in 1985. He served on the Faribault County Fair Board for 18 years; he hauled livestock for Arends Sale Yard in Blue Earth for many years. Harry was also an avid woodworker and gardener.

Harry is survived by his wife: Marian Borglum of rural Bricelyn, his five children: Mark and his wife Carol Borglum of North St. Paul; Katherine Campina of Sauk Rapids; Colleen and her husband Paul Knudtson of Blue Earth; Kellen and wife Karen Borglum of Frost; Rebecca and her husband Steve Glimsdal of Frost. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Lindsay and Dustin Borglum; Haley and Hanna Knudtson; Amy, Dana, and Michael Borglum; Patrick and Nathan Glimsdal, one sister: May Monson of Blue Earth, two brothers: Leo Borglum of Nebraska; Henry and wife Katie Borglum of St. Paul, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister in infancy, two brothers-in-law: Elwood Monson and Willard Steinhauer, one sister-in-law: Angela Steinhauer.
